World surfing champion
Former student and 2012 ASP World Surfing Champion, Joel Parkinson was the first former student to be inducted into the Currimundi Primary School ‘Hall of Fame’ at a special presentation on parade. Joel attended our school from pre-school through to year 7, before moving to the Gold Coast to complete high school and further his surfing career.
As a grommet, Joel was crowned Junior World Champion and has spent the past 12 years on the World Tour. He has been ranked in the Top 10 surfers in the world for most of his career. In 2012 Joel won his maiden World Championship in a win that was acknowledged as well overdue.
Currimundi Primary’s Surfing Excellence Program and Beach Carnival bear his name and Joel has been a regular visitor over the years when his schedule allows. He really supports what our school is about and takes great pride in giving his time to encourage all our students to achieve success in whatever field they choose.
Joel is a great example of a ‘Curra Kid’, a champion kid and a champion adult.
