On Thursday 01 June 2023, five of our Year 06 students attended the Caloundra High School 2023 Talented Maths Challenge Day.
Marlon, Isabelle, Zoe, Hudson and Ryan started the day as a school team and across the day each school group was moved into mixed school groups to solve a variety of Maths Challenges. Mrs Pyke accompanied them to the challenge and describes the events of the day below.
The first rotation involved geometry activities and our students wasted no time deciding who was going to be involved in each activity.
In one activity, they needed to measure different 3D shapes that were placed on the main table for all to use. The students had to measure the 3D shapes without lifting them. They then had to take their measurements back to their table to make "sleeping bags" for these shapes. These sleeping bags had to be a snug fit!
The other activity was a tangrams activity where they had to work together to dissect the angels to replicate the patterns that they were given. This really tested them and honestly my brain hurt after this as well.
Problem solving activities were the flavour of the day! Students were given instructions to use linking cubes to make seven different patterns. These cubes then need to be standing up, not lying down.
They all did amazing well, hence we came second in the SCHOOL CHALLENGE! An amazing result considering the were up against a lot of high school students!
